Just In: Celebrating Dr. Saraki, Nigeria’s ‘Dependable, Distinctive’ Senate Leader At 61

This phrase accurately characterizes the standing of Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, who celebrates his 61st birthday today, in the history of Nigeria’s Senate. During his tenure as the President of the Eighth Senate from 2015 to 2019, Saraki set a high standard, serving as a benchmark against which both predecessors and successors are evaluated.
While the 8th Senate’s period generates mixed feelings among two groups of Nigerians, namely the Buharists and ordinary citizens, Saraki is perceived differently by each group. Buharists, feeling deprived of absolute control, resent Saraki, whereas ordinary citizens see him as a symbol of genuine democracy with a balanced separation of powers among the three branches of government.
Recognizing the challenges in his emergence as Senate President, Saraki aligned himself with the group advocating for true democracy. He understood that his close relationship with colleagues was crucial for retaining the top legislative position amid ongoing challenges from the establishment.
Saraki aimed to bridge the gap between the legislature and the people, introducing innovative ideas, public engagements, and positive exchanges. The 8th Senate focused on improving livelihood, governance, and business, holding public hearings on budget passage and roundtable dialogues on national issues. These engagements took place outside the legislative complex, fostering better connections with the public.
Saraki’s leadership in the 8th Senate was marked by extensive work on public petitions, introducing landmark bills, and addressing immediate societal concerns. Key legislations included the Compulsory Treatment and Care of Victims of Gunshots Act, Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions Act, North East Development Commission (NEDC) Act, Police Trust Fund Act, and Police Reforms Bill.
Efforts were also directed at combating corruption through acts such as the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Agency Act, Federal Audit Services Commission Act, Whistleblowers Protection Bill, and Witness Protection Programmes Bill.
Despite some bills facing resistance from the Buhari presidency, Saraki’s leadership emphasized transparency, accountability, and openness. The 8th Senate’s performance became a yardstick for subsequent Senate Presidents, reflecting the impact of Saraki’s era on Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
