On Saturday, Anabs Sara-Igbe, a former spokesperson for the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), revealed that Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State contemplated resigning from his position due to the ongoing conflict with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. As the National Coordinator of the South-South Leadership Forum, Sara-Igbe emphasized that Fubara did not have complete control over Rivers State funds, facing challenges in managing the state’s financial matters. In an interview with Channels Television, Sara-Igbe explained that Wike linked funds from the Federation Account to specific projects, causing difficulties for the governor in governing the state effectively.

He elaborated, “The money coming from the Federation Account, Wike tied the money to one project or the other. So, when the money comes, it goes to the banks and they collect theirs from it and pay the contractors. Of course, we didn’t even know the cost of the contracts, so when this governor felt, ‘how will I run a government when I don’t have the resources,’ the minister became hostile to the governor, and the governor said, ‘okay, let me resign if that is the case.’ The PDP elders prevailed on him not to resign, thinking it would be messy.”

The ongoing dispute between Wike and Fubara has led to a crisis in the state, resulting in 27 lawmakers defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Additionally, several commissioners resigned from their positions due to the strained relationship between Wike and Fubara.
