During a meeting with Directors and Heads of Departments within the Ministry in preparation for the 2024 budget defense at the National Assembly, Umahi appointed the committees with the task of reviewing the outstanding certificates owed by the current administration from May 29th until the present.
Umahi emphasized the need to address the significant challenges posed by the substantial debts resulting from unpaid certificates inherited from the past administration, amounting to N1.5 trillion to date. Additionally, he highlighted the anticipated contract reviews due to inflation, identifying these as critical issues that must be addressed to facilitate progress.
In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Minister, Orji Uchenna Orji, on Sunday, Umahi instructed the committees to “review the approved and unapproved variation of prices and all augmentations that were approved or are yet to be approved and make recommendations to the Ministry’s management.”
Umahi revealed that the Ministry had presented these debts and reviews to the President’s economic team and the Federal Executive Committee on road sector funding. He expressed confidence that the internal reviews conducted by the committees, aided by external consultants, would lead to informed decisions for the advancement of the Ministry.
The Minister encouraged owed contractors to approach these committees with supporting documents for their claims from Tuesday, 12th of December 2023, to Friday, 22nd of December 2023, at the Ministry of Works Headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
Umahi underscored the unique attention required for the road sector, emphasizing that beyond the 2024 budget allocation received by the Ministry, the road sector is a crucial catalyst for economic development in Nigeria. He highlighted its potential to positively impact the security, agriculture, trade and investment, health, education, and overall development of the nation.
