Breaking: Senate Calls On Nigerian Government To Allocate 10% Of Budget To Agriculture
The Nigerian Senate has urged the executive to guarantee that a minimum of 10 percent of the total annual budget revenue is allocated to agricultural production. Sen. Salihu Mustapha (APC, Kwara), the chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture Production, Services, and Rural Development, issued this call in Abuja during the joint budget defense session of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security on Monday….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mustapha emphasized the concerns shared by the Senate and House committees on Agriculture Production, Services, and Rural Development regarding the challenges faced by the agricultural sector. Despite these challenges, he highlighted that the sector continues to be the largest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) outside the oil sector, contributing over 20 percent.
Expressing disappointment, he pointed out that the budgetary allocation to the sector falls short of the 10 percent stipulated by the Maputo Declaration, to which Nigeria is a signatory. Mustapha stressed the critical role of the agricultural sector in lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty and ensuring much-needed food security.
He urged the executive to demonstrate the political will by allocating a minimum of 10 percent of national budgets and revenues to the agricultural sector, emphasizing the sector’s vital importance in national economic policies and future budgets.
Mustapha underscored the significance of the budget defense process, stating that both chambers of the 10th Assembly are prepared and committed to working together to pass the 2024 budget in a timely manner.
