The senator emphasized that the presence of major social media platforms in the country is crucial for driving economic growth, job creation, efficient dispute resolution, and revenue generation. Despite Nigeria being Africa’s most populous nation with active engagement on popular social media platforms, Nwoko pointed out that these multinational companies, including Facebook, X, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, Snapchat, and TikTok, have yet to establish offices in Nigeria.

Nwoko cited success stories of other multinational corporations like MTN Group, Shell, Chevron, Nestle, Total, and P&G, which have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth and technological advancement by establishing operations in the country. He noted the absence of offices for social media platforms in Nigeria despite the government’s mandate in 2022, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), for online platforms to register, open offices in Nigeria, and appoint government contact persons.

The lawmaker recalled the 2021 suspension of Twitter (now X) by the Nigerian government, emphasizing that such issues could be more efficiently resolved if social media platforms had established local offices in Nigeria. Nwoko expressed concern about the lack of local representation, slower response times to user complaints, regulatory inquiries, and the missed economic opportunities for job creation and technology transfer.

He urged the Ministries of Communication and Digital Economy, and Foreign Affairs to actively engage with multinational social media platforms, encouraging them to establish offices in Nigeria. Nwoko stressed the potential economic benefits, job creation, and increased local engagement resulting from the presence of these offices. Additionally, he called on NITDA to monitor compliance with existing regulations, ensuring that online platforms adhere to the requirements for the benefit of Nigerian users and the economy.

Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:

“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.

He said:

“In 2023, Peter Obi asked Obasanjo, who called me while I was in London. He was at the Hilton with Datti and two other stakeholders. When I answered, I didn’t hear him clearly, so I asked, ‘Who is that?’ He said, ‘My name is Obasanjo.’”

“I apologized, and he said, ‘I’m calling you to come and join me.’ At the time, he was publicly denying any role in Peter Obi’s agenda. Peter Obi wanted me to work for him, but I refused.”

Bwala added that Ambassador Amuchi Osuk was initially sent to start the campaign, and Obi’s team expected Bwala to join because of religious dynamics:
