Breaking: Edo Governor Obaseki Seek For Decentralization Of National Security-Structure
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has advocated for the decentralization of the country’s security architecture to address crime and criminality. Governor Obaseki emphasized the need for a decentralized legislative framework to enable local agencies to actively collaborate with federal security agencies, addressing crime at the local level. He highlighted the significant role of traditional leaders in enhancing security arrangements, emphasizing the importance of empowering local communities to support security efforts.
The governor commended the collaborative efforts of security agencies, which contributed to a 47.7% reduction in crime in the state from 2020 to the present. He acknowledged the involvement of citizens and the role of technology in driving future security initiatives.
Furthermore, Governor Obaseki expressed pride in the reforms introduced by his administration in the last seven years, especially in the security sector. He emphasized the importance of ongoing efforts to minimize crime further in the state.
In a related development, a Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned Governor Obaseki to explain the delay in swearing in eight Judges-designate recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC) since June 2023. The court, responding to a public interest litigation, has given the governor and other defendants until January 22, 2024, to comply with the order and show cause for the delay. The NJC recently rejected a request from the Governor of Osun State for the approval of the next most senior High Court Judge to function as Acting Chief Judge, affirming the status of Justice Ojo as the recognized Chief Judge of Osun State.
