The arrest resulted from credible intelligence received by the base regarding the illicit activities in the area.

As the anti-Crude Oil Theft Patrol Team approached MT VINNALARIS 1 LAGOS, the two boats attached to the vessel attempted to flee upon spotting naval personnel, confirming the vessel’s engagement in illegal activities. Upon inspection, it was revealed that the vessel was actively involved in siphoning crude oil from both sides of the well head, with 17 Nigerian crew members onboard.

The vessel, with a storage capacity of approximately 15,000 metric tonnes, had loaded about 500 metric tonnes of crude oil at the time of its arrest. The Navy emphasized its commitment to curbing crude oil theft and other illegal activities in Nigeria’s maritime domain, warning that it would employ all legitimate means to track and apprehend perpetrators. The Director urged the public to report criminal activities, particularly in coastal communities, for prompt navy intervention.
