Nigerians Express Concerns As ASUU Highlights Shortage Of Lecturers In Public Universities (Details)
Nigerians have raised concerns in response to the recent revelation by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) regarding the critical shortage of lecturers in various departments across public universities in the country. The alarm was sounded on Tuesday, with ASUU pointing to the increasing trend of lecturers resigning in pursuit of better opportunities abroad….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

ASUU expressed deep concern over the inadequacy of staff despite the establishment of more universities, asserting that this has not effectively addressed the admission challenges faced by these institutions. The academic body called on the government to focus on enhancing the carrying capacity of existing universities to accommodate a larger number of students.
In a statement made by Prof. Ayo Akinwole, the Chairman of the University of Ibadan Chapter of ASUU, the deplorable state of Nigeria’s public universities was highlighted, with stressed and frustrated lecturers facing unfavorable working conditions. Akinwole emphasized the need for urgent intervention from the government to address issues such as poor remuneration, delayed salaries, unpaid allowances, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of respect for the academic community.
Akinwole expressed concern that unless there is a significant improvement in the conditions of service, including salaries and allowances, the trend of lecturers resigning and seeking opportunities abroad would persist. He urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene promptly to prevent the continued brain drain in the academic sector.
Furthermore, Akinwole criticized the paradox of the government proposing to establish 32 more universities while inadequately funding existing institutions. He called for a deliberate effort to attract and retain quality lecturers, as universities worldwide actively recruit Nigerian academics due to the unfavorable working conditions at home.
The ASUU chairman highlighted the bureaucratic challenges faced by universities in promptly replacing resigned staff, citing the lengthy approval process from Abuja. This delay, he noted, often results in the loss of the best candidates to countries that value and respect academic excellence.
As Nigerians react to ASUU’s revelations, there is growing concern about the future of higher education in the country and the need for urgent government intervention to address the systemic issues plaguing the academic sector.
