According to statements made to Nivo News Online on Monday, the dredging activities carried out by private individuals licensed by the government have caused significant environmental threats and havoc in the community.
A resident, Ayo Abejoye, highlighted the negative consequences of the dredging, particularly the increased risk of flooding that affects roads and buildings along the coastline. He emphasized that erosion is an inevitable outcome of dredging, and the proximity of the river to residential areas has escalated the flood-related challenges.
Margaret, another resident, echoed these concerns, citing instances of property destruction due to floods caused by the river activities. She expressed discomfort with the deteriorating environmental conditions.
The community head, Olusegun Alexander, disclosed that he had notified the government about their plight but no action had been taken. He emphasized the environmental repercussions of sand extraction, stating that erosion is a direct consequence. Despite his appeals to the government, the dredging activities, authorized by influential individuals, continue to pose a threat to the community’s safety and property.
Alexander also mentioned previous promises by the dredgers to construct pilings to control the adverse effects, but no progress has been observed. He underscored the community’s commitment to advocating for their safety, even if labeled as “hoodlums” in their efforts to oppose the operations.
However, a source from the Lagos State Ministry of Waterfront and Infrastructure Development suggested that the issue might not solely be dredging, pointing out that many houses in the community are constructed on low land. The source emphasized the need for a proper investigation to ascertain the root cause of the problem and encouraged residents to submit formal complaints with pictorial evidence for a thorough examination. Additionally, the source suggested that the allegations might stem from failed negotiations between the operators and the community.
