Just In: The Reasons Behind Tinubu’s Non-participation In Addressing Global Leaders At COP28 Summit (See Details)

President Tinubu, initially scheduled to speak at the Summit alongside other heads of state, did not deliver a speech, prompting concerns about Nigeria’s stance at the conference. Typically, Heads of State and Governments present their national statements, plans, and commitments against climate change during the summit.
The ‘World Climate Action Summit,’ a high-level segment for world leaders, was set for December 1 and 2, with over 80 world leaders listed to speak. President Tinubu, positioned as the 36th speaker, failed to address the audience on both days.
According to The Cable, Tinubu was set to speak after the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, but around 4:10 pm, he left the plenary room for a scheduled meeting with another president. However, the meeting did not occur, and Tinubu returned to his hotel room before signing an agreement with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, later that night.
In a bid to signify Nigeria’s representation, Environment Minister Balarabe Lawal sat in the president’s chair and was expected to speak on his behalf. However, after Christodoulides concluded his speech, Nigeria was skipped, and the next leader was called to the rostrum.
Organizers explained that a representative could only read the president’s speech on day 9 of the session. Despite claims by the Minister of Foreign Affairs that Nigeria prioritized action over speech, it was revealed that those not willing to speak did not register on the UN’s list of speakers.
