Recent protests erupted among students of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in response to the elevated fees. During Wednesday’s plenary session, Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, representing Odogbolu State Constituency, drew the Assembly’s attention to the fee hikes and the ensuing protests.
Adeleye recounted the mass demonstration by Tai Solarin University of Education students, appealing to the Assembly to intervene and ensure a reduction in the escalated fees. In response, Speaker Oluomo acknowledged the economic challenges faced by parents and stressed the need for compassion and empathy from the heads of tertiary institutions.
While recognizing the institutions’ need to address pressing financial demands in the face of inflation, Oluomo emphasized the importance of making the new fees affordable, ensuring that students are not unduly disadvantaged. The Speaker urged the institutions to strike a balance between meeting their financial needs and considering the economic circumstances of students and their families.
