Following the conclusive ruling of the Supreme Court on the 2023 presidential election results, Prince Adewole Adebayo, a contestant representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP), expressed dismay over the conduct of politicians during elections in an interview with NIVO NEWS….CONTINUE READING....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

He touched upon various issues, including the observation that politicians often seek power through legal avenues rather than justice. Adebayo emphasized the urgent need for electoral reforms, proposing a system where winners are not sworn into office until court cases against them are resolved. He also discussed concerns about the appointment of judges to higher courts and the role of technicalities in legal proceedings.

In addressing the delay in the presidential election petitions, which exceeded the expected timeline, Adebayo acknowledged improvements but stressed the importance of further refining the process to ensure quicker resolutions. He outlined three key steps for progress, highlighting the role of politicians in driving legal reforms and the need for moral persuasion to achieve legislative changes.

Discussing the Supreme Court’s efficiency, Adebayo asserted that the judiciary is not the core issue; rather, it is the politicians’ expectations of using the court as a means to acquire power. He clarified that the court’s role is to deliver justice, not power, and emphasized the importance of understanding this distinction.

Addressing criticisms of the Supreme Court’s reliance on technicalities, Adebayo explained that election matters inherently involve technical aspects. He distinguished between substantive claims and technical claims, noting that politicians often seek technical relief to secure victory rather than justice. He defended the Supreme Court’s approach, stating that it adhered to the rules and limitations set by law.

Regarding allegations made by retired Justice Musa Muhammed Datijo about administrative issues within the judiciary, Adebayo acknowledged existing concerns and suggested a need for internal reforms and a review of remuneration structures to address the challenges faced by judges.

In response to queries about the depletion of justices at the Supreme Court, Adebayo proposed a more liberal approach to leadership in Nigeria and suggested reviewing the process of appointing judges, starting with the Court of Appeal.

In conclusion, Adebayo emphasized the need for a balanced approach in the appointment of justices, involving both the bench and the bar. He suggested beginning the process with the Court of Appeal before making radical changes to the Supreme Court appointment system.

In an interview with ARISE Television, Utomi explained that remaining in the ADC would have left Obi “trapped,” noting the controversial nature of that party’s presidential primary. Utomi highlighted that other aspirants, including Chibuike Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-deen, had rejected the primary results and lodged complaints. Consequently, Utomi described Obi’s exit as a strategic and intelligent decision.

Regarding the broader political landscape, Utomi remarked:

  • While polling indicated that Obi would have won within the ADC, the prospect of the party leadership permitting a transparent process was doubtful.

  • He argued that the general management of primary processes across the political spectrum renders them a “complete farce”.

  • He further criticized these events as “make-believe” democratic processes, where candidates are often imposed upon the party.
