Clement Adams, Officer-in-Charge/Chief of Field Office at UNICEF Nigeria Bauchi Field Office, shared this information during the Media Dialogue on World Toilet Day 2023 held in Bauchi. The theme for World Toilet Day is ‘Accelerating Change,’ highlighting the journey towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) – Clean Water and Sanitation.
Adams underscored the economic benefits of incentivizing sanitation through initiatives such as promoting toilet businesses, creating jobs, improving income generation, and contributing to the goal of achieving open defecation-free communities.
He stated, “We are about seven years away from 2030 – the country’s global target for the SDGs. We must, therefore, reinvigorate our efforts if we must meet the sanitation target of SDG 6 – safe toilets and water for all by 2030.”
Highlighting the severe socio-economic losses associated with open defecation in Nigeria, Adams emphasized the need to replicate successful achievements, such as the Open Defecation Free certification in Katagum LGA, across the country.
The Commissioner for Water Resources, Nuhu Zaki, acknowledged Katagum’s recent certification as Open Defecation Free, attributing it to the state government’s dedicated efforts. Zaki reported the construction of 113,000 improved toilets across the state as part of ongoing initiatives to address open defecation.
