Nigerians React As NLC Strike In Abia Leaves Courts And Schools Under Lock, Disrupting Normal Operations

This industrial action, effective since Tuesday, November 14, is enforced across all NLC affiliate unions in Abia, as outlined in a press release signed by Chairman Comrade Pascal Nweke.
Upon visiting the Abia State High Court complex at Ikot Ekpene Road, Umuahia, Nivo News observed the High Court and Magistrate Courts within the main buildings securely locked. Lawyers, litigants, and judiciary staff were found lingering outside the main gate. Primary schools, including School Road Primary School and Ibeku High School, along with other government schools, saw teachers participating in the strike. Students of City Primary School on School Road engaged in football activities during regular learning hours.
Employees of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Umuahia also expressed solidarity with the NLC directive by joining the strike. However, some staff in certain Abia State government establishments only observed a partial strike.
Correspondent observations noted civil servants entering the offices of the Head of Service, Secretary to Abia State government, and the Michael Okpara auditorium through alternative entrances, while some offices remained locked.
Electricity workers supplied power to Umuahia city but withdrew the service by 11:10 AM. Meanwhile, most commercial banks in Umuahia continued normal operations for customers, though entry was managed in batches.
A bank customer, commending his undisclosed bank for opening during the strike, expressed frustration with frequent NLC strikes, arguing that past labor actions had not yielded significant benefits for the common man. Efforts to reach NLC Chairman in Abia State, Pascal Nweke, for insights on the strike’s compliance level were unsuccessful due to an unreachable phone number.

Discussing his financial management strategy in an interview with Advocacy for Good Governance, Obi explained that he opposed using state funds to support an un-elected office. Those successfully shortlisted are required to log on to upload their credentials and pick their preferred date and venue for the physical screening, while strictly following all portal guidelines.
This recruitment cycle encompasses the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), and the Federal Fire Service (FFS).
Issuing a stern warning against fraudsters, the board emphasized that candidates must not make any payments for shortlisting, document uploading, venue selection, or final placement. Applicants are also strongly advised to ignore scam messages, unverified links, and impostors falsely claiming affiliation with the board.
The recruitment process commenced with online submissions in July 2025, leading up to the Computer-Based Test (CBT) held in November of that same year.
