Tragic: Gombe Road Accidents Claim 79 Lives, Leaving 779 Injured, FRSC Reports....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Commander of the Corps, Mr. Felix Theman, made this announcement in Gombe during the launch of the 2023 Ember Months campaign on Tuesday.

The campaign’s theme is “Speed Thrills but Kills, Drive Responsibly and Avoid Overloading.”

Theman reported that there had been a total of 779 injuries in accidents, although the number of accidents had significantly decreased. This trend was attributed to a decrease in the number of passengers traveling in the state.

“In 2022, the command recorded a total of 445 accidents with 57 fatalities, resulting in the deaths of 110 individuals and injuries to 1,074 others. However, in 2023, up to October 31, there have been 278 accidents with 43 fatalities, leading to the deaths of 79 individuals and injuries to 779,” Theman stated.

He also mentioned that the Corps had apprehended 4,665 offenders who had committed 5,098 traffic violations over the past ten months across the state. The most common offenses that led to arrests and ticketing included overloading, failure to install speed-limiting devices, failure to display a number plate, driving without a license, failure to wear a seatbelt, and driving against traffic.

Theman noted that the Corps, in partnership with stakeholders, is taking proactive measures to ensure safe road use during the Ember months. State routes are being mapped to enable personnel to conduct effective patrols, surveillance, and traffic rule enforcement, ensuring the safety of motorists.

While commending the state government for improving road infrastructure, Theman cautioned drivers against using it as an excuse for excessive speeding, emphasizing the importance of road safety.

The Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, expressed the state government’s concern for the safety of all road users in the state. He highlighted the government’s efforts to construct roads and install solar-powered street lights in the city to enhance road safety. He called on people to obey road rules and share the roads with others to ensure a safe and responsible road environment.
