The Enugu State Police have apprehended more than 53 suspected hoodlums believed to be associated with secret cults, contributing to the rise in abduction incidents in the state.
The Commissioner of Police for the Enugu State Police Command, Kanayo Uzuegbu, reassured the public that the state is safe for business and investment. He emphasized that those planning to return for Christmas celebrations should not be concerned.
During a briefing in Enugu, Commissioner Uzuegbu also presented the achievements of the police in crime prevention over the recent months.
He discredited many reported kidnapping incidents on social media as fake news, asserting that they were sponsored by individuals seeking to cause panic and fear among residents. These incidents were often exaggerated and misrepresented by these mischief-makers, who aimed to disrupt the government’s, police’s, and security agencies’ efforts in combatting crime in the state.
Commissioner Uzuegbu clarified that some of the nighttime security breaches involved abduction rather than kidnapping, and they were perpetrated by secret cult members. The anti-cultism squad of the Enugu State Police Command has been activated to address this issue and eliminate cultists from the state.
He commended Governor Peter Mbah for his support of the Command and stated that he had received the Governor’s approval and full backing to take strong measures against unrepentant cultists and their criminal activities.
In a warning to cultists, the police chief urged them to repent or face the consequences. He also encouraged citizens to report criminal activities to the nearest police station.
With the holiday season approaching, Commissioner Uzuegbu assured the people of the state, especially those returning to celebrate Christmas and New Year, of adequate security.
During the arrests, the police seized various dangerous items, including 28 firearms, 30 live ammunition rounds, 66 live cartridges, 25 motor vehicles, 16 motorcycles, mobile phones, cash in naira, military uniforms, and other weapons.

Case Background and Prosecution
The convicts were apprehended following a violent cult clash at the Ikenne Town Hall on October 23, 2023, which severely disrupted public peace and local activities.
Prosecuting officer ASP Olaide Rawlings established during the trial that Okusanya belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, while Gafar was affiliated with the Alora Confraternity, alongside other accomplices currently at large. Their actions violated several provisions of the Prohibition of Forcible Entry and Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Anti-Violent and Related Offences Law of Ogun State, 2016.
Finding the prosecution’s evidence credible and compelling beyond a reasonable doubt, Magistrate Oke delivered the sentence to serve as a strict deterrent against unlawful secret societies and violent disturbances in the state.
The Nigeria Police Force, operating via the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, successfully apprehended and repatriated Mahadijiria Abdoulaye, a Chadian national wanted by authorities in N’Djamena over the May 3, 2026, murder and torture of Nazik Mahamat Saleh . Following an international arrest warrant issued on June 22, 2026, by the Court of Appeal in N’Djamena for Abdoulaye and her accomplice Fatime Senoussi Mouktar—alongside links to narcotics trafficking—the suspect fled to Nigeria. Intelligence-led operations tracked her down to Railway Quarters in Nasarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, where she was arrested on August 5, 2026. Under established bilateral frameworks and in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB N’Djamena, she was repatriated back to Chad via Lomé, Togo, on August 14, 2026, to face trial.
