The death toll in the ongoing gang conflict in Benue State has increased to 25, with three additional individuals reportedly losing their lives in the Ayati community of Ukum Local Government Area.
The conflict originated over the weekend, with a minimum of 22 casualties recorded in the Chito and Tyo Akosu communities of Ukum LGA. The violence ensued during a brutal confrontation between two rival criminal factions, known as the “Chain Gang” and “Full Fire” groups.
According to reports, the confrontation, which began over the weekend, extended to the Ayati community on Sunday evening, resulting in the deaths of three more suspected gang members.

An anonymous source in the region informed Nivo News: “We have learned that the attack in Ayati, where three lives were lost on Sunday evening, was an extension of the conflict that began over the weekend in Chito and Tyo Akosu. The reality is that it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish who is affiliated with which group among our youth. We cannot discern sympathizers from non-sympathizers. This is why the violence is escalating, and lives are being taken as if they were expendable.”
Ezra Nyiyongo, the representative for Ukum State Constituency in the State House of Assembly, has responded to the bloodshed by urging the state government to intensify its efforts to address the crisis.
“As you are aware, the Commissioner for Information, Matthew Aboh, was abducted. One of our respected elders was abducted and later met his demise at the hands of these criminals. These incidents keep recurring. We hear reports of 24 people being killed today, 11 on other occasions, and it continues to happen almost daily,” he expressed.
Nyiyongo went on to tell Nivo News: “As a government, we need to enhance our strategy. I am personally deeply distressed, and I believe the government is seriously examining the situation. As a legislator, I have reported it to my Speaker, and we will take it up with the Governor. I have faith that we will make progress sooner or later. During our election campaigns, the Governor promised to do everything to bring peace, even if it required using a more diplomatic approach with the individuals in the bush.”
He added, “Sometimes, I am embarrassed because if it were external aggressors attacking us, then we could say there is a breakdown in law and order. But here, we have a situation where brothers from the same parents are pointing guns at each other. Who will report whom? This is the predicament we are facing. It is devastating. It is horrendous.”
