Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has advised commission staff to remain non-partisan and uphold their integrity as they prepare for the upcoming governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi.
Yakubu made this statement during his visits to various INEC offices to assess the preparations for the elections scheduled for November 11th. He emphasized the commitment of INEC to conducting credible elections in these states.
He reminded everyone that INEC is not a political party and does not have a candidate in the upcoming governorship elections. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that the people of Bayelsa and Imo States can freely choose their governors, and INEC is dedicated to safeguarding the people’s choices.
Yakubu urged Electoral Officers (EOs) in both states to ensure the full activation of Registration Area Centres (RACs) well in advance of the elections to ensure a smooth process. INEC aims to ensure that election officials fulfill their responsibilities effectively on election day.
To prepare the officials further, a refresher training will be held on November 10th, following previous training sessions on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Yakubu and his team also held discussions with members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCESS) in both states. The purpose of this meeting was to assess their readiness for the upcoming elections.
During the meeting, they discussed various security measures, including the protection of voters, election personnel, materials, collation centers, and transport providers.
Yakubu concluded his visit by inspecting INEC facilities in Yenagoa, where he reviewed the available non-sensitive materials in preparation for the off-cycle election.
The Chairman was accompanied by National Commissioners and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) from both states.
