In the near future, the National Open University Study Center will be established at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. This development follows the generous contribution of six computer sets and internet accessories by the Obijackson Foundation, a charitable organization.
According to a statement released by the Public Relations Officer, ASC of the Akwa Ibom State Command, Richard Metong, this initiative aims to positively impact the lives of incarcerated individuals and facilitate their successful reintegration into society. The foundation, in collaboration with the custodial center, has launched the Inmates’ Rehabilitation and Empowerment Program under the theme “Imprisonment for Correction: A Call for Rehabilitating and Empowering Inmates for a Better Society.”
The program provided support to a total of 13 inmates from the four Custodial Centers in the Command, whose fines were covered by the Foundation. These beneficiaries received certification from the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity in various vocational skills, including laundry, vulcanizing, welding, and barbering.
In addition to their training, the inmates were each provided with startup cheques amounting to one hundred and fifty thousand naira (N150,000) and the necessary tools for their respective trades, all of which were learned within the facility, as outlined in the statement.
Pamela Egbo, the Executive Director of the Obijackson Foundation, emphasized that the foundation’s involvement was motivated by the belief that reformation and rehabilitation are essential for granting inmates the opportunity to lead meaningful and sustainable lives, ultimately enabling them to transform into better members of society.
The Controller of Corrections, Julius Ezugwu, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa, for the partnership that not only supported the inmates with relief items and medicines but also facilitated their well-being.
Deputy Controller of Corrections, Archibong Ekong, who is in charge of the Center, highlighted the significance of the rehabilitation and empowerment program in alleviating anxiety among the inmates and affording them a second chance to become responsible and improved citizens in society.
