The federal government is set to establish a Presidential Steering Committee later this month to oversee and ensure the success of the Safe Schools Project. This announcement came during a national summit on the Safe Schools Initiative project with the theme “Tackling Identified Threats in Nigeria,” held in Abuja.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who was represented by his senior special assistant (Technical), Professor Bolaji Bernard Babatunde, emphasized the need for a steering committee to improve the coordination of the school safety project. This committee will facilitate collaboration among key stakeholders and optimize the allocation of resources to achieve effective results in alignment with the Safe Schools Declaration (SSD).
Akume revealed that the presidential steering committee would be inaugurated after a ministerial retreat. He commended the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the coordinating agency for the project, for introducing significant initiatives aimed at preventing attacks on schools and enhancing security across the nation.
Highlighting the urgency of safeguarding educational institutions and protecting students and teachers, the SGF encouraged both states and local governments to allocate budgetary resources to support the implementation of the School Safety Project at their respective levels. He further advised states to engage with the project by establishing and coordinating response centers in partnership with the recently launched National Response Coordination Centre to extend the initiative’s benefits to all corners of their regions.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed concern over the safety and well-being of Nigerian students, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to comprehensively and urgently address these pressing issues. He stressed that the safety of schools should not be viewed solely as the government’s responsibility but as a collective effort.
Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Commandant-General of the NSCDC, explained that the summit was organized by the Safe Schools Coordination Center to facilitate and equip relevant stakeholders with implementation ideas. He expressed his determination to put an end to all forms of attacks on schoolchildren across the country. Dr. Audi also acknowledged that the center had received less than five percent support from state governments, with some states donating structures to serve as coordination centers.
