Senator Darlington Nwokocha, who serves as the Senate Minority Whip and represents Abia Central in the National Assembly, has been unseated by the Court of Appeal in Lagos. The Appeal Court ruled in favor of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Col Austin Akobundu (retd), declaring him the legitimate senator elected in the February 25 elections. Nwokocha, a member of the Labour Party (LP), had previously claimed victory.

The court’s decision overturned the National Assembly election petition tribunal’s ruling, which had initially upheld Nwokocha’s victory.

Additionally, the Court of Appeal in Lagos dismissed the appeal lodged by Anthony Agbazuere, a PDP candidate, against Ginger Onwusibe, the LP’s House of Representatives member. The court affirmed Onwusibe’s victory in the February 25 National Assembly election and concurred with the tribunal’s decision that Agbazuere’s case lacked merit. As a result, Onwusibe was affirmed as the duly elected member representing the Isiala Ngwa North/Isiala Ngwa South federal constituency.

In response to the Senate appeal case outcome, the Abia chapter of the PDP, led by Allwell Asiforo, extended congratulations to their candidate, Akobundu, and expressed gratitude to the judiciary for its just decision. Akobundu, who hails from Ikwuano LGA of Abia, previously served as the Minister of State for Defence.
