Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has extended his heartfelt apologies to the people of the state for the recent political turmoil that has unfolded. In a statement released on Saturday, Fubara characterized the crisis as “unfortunate tensions.”

The governor also conveyed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his involvement in resolving the conflict with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Fubara’s statement read, “Dear citizens of Rivers State, I believe it is imperative to issue this press release regarding recent developments in our beloved state.

“On the night of Sunday, October 29, 2023, I received distressing reports that the revered chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly had been engulfed in flames. The fire was subsequently extinguished by the fire service, and security agencies took control of the situation.

“My visit to the assembly complex on Monday, October 30, 2023, was intended to assess the extent of the damage and take remedial measures to safeguard lives and property within the assembly complex. I instructed security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and provide me with a detailed report.

“Shortly thereafter, I received reports of the state House of Assembly splitting into two factions: one group claimed to have impeached and suspended the House Leader and three others, with the intention of initiating impeachment proceedings against me, while the rival faction impeached the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, triggering a political crisis.

“I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, for his paternal intervention, which initiated a series of communication channels to expedite the resolution of these ongoing crises. I would also like to thank our esteemed elders who are currently mediating in this matter.”

Fubara further added, “I want to make it unequivocally clear that my actions are driven by the desire to restore peace and stability in our state. I am a proponent of peace, and as the governor, the progress of our state is my foremost concern.

“As a result, no effort is too great for me to exert in pursuit of this goal. Furthermore, as leaders, it is our joint responsibility, as the immediate past governor and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, along with myself, to leverage our positions and influence both within and outside the state to advance the welfare, security, and prosperity of our citizens.

“We must, therefore, not allow circumstances that could hinder all our collective efforts to achieve greatness for our people to persist.

“On our part, we are constantly willing and prepared to embrace the path towards enduring peace and serenity, with a commitment to fully support all endeavors and initiatives led by Mr. President and other well-meaning Nigerians, including my fellow governors and respected elders.

“I assure the people of Rivers State that peace will undoubtedly prevail, and together we will continue to labor for the well-being, security, and progress of our state.”

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
