The Labour Party has expressed its support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its call for the redeployment of Imo State Commissioner of Police, Stephen Olarewaju. This support comes following an alleged attack on NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero in the state.
Ajaero, who was in Owerri to mobilize workers for a protest over unpaid salaries in Imo State, was reportedly kidnapped by the police and subjected to brutality.
Leadership from both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) issued a 5-day ultimatum to the federal government on Friday, demanding the removal of the police boss over his alleged involvement in the attack.
In response to the assault on Ajaero, the Labour Party emphasized that a reorganization of the police structure in Imo State is necessary.
The statement released by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, partly reads, “On that note, the Labour Party aligns with the leadership of NLC and TUC to demand the immediate removal of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State, the Area Commander, and other officials who are believed to be involved in the mistreatment and degradation of Comrade Ajaero and fellow workers.”
The Labour Party had previously filed a petition with the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, expressing concerns over the continued presence of the current Commissioner of Police in Imo State, who previously served as the head of the Adamawa State Police Command. Despite the Commission’s directive for his immediate redeployment, he has reportedly disregarded the order.
The statement further called on the police hierarchy to restructure the entire police setup in Imo State, emphasizing that their role in the attack on labor union leaders was conducted in bad faith and provides unmistakable evidence of questionable involvement by certain individuals within the police ranks.
