In Makurdi, a Chief Magistrate’s Court issued an order on Friday to remand Matthew Bem in a correctional center for allegedly taking the life of his wife, Mngusonum Bem.
The 42-year-old farmer, residing in Korinya Settlement within Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue, faced charges of culpable homicide. However, Chief Magistrate Mr. T.K. Atta refrained from taking his plea, citing jurisdictional limitations.
The case has been adjourned until December 20, 2023, for further proceedings.
Prior to this, Prosecution Counsel Inspector Godwin Ato informed the court that the case had been transferred from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Tse-Agberagba, on October 26, 2023, as indicated in a letter dated the same day.
The letter conveyed that on October 24, 2023, information was received from the officer-in-charge of Korinya Police Station, reporting that a man had fatally wounded his wife.
According to the letter, on that ill-fated day of October 24, the defendant engaged in a physical altercation with his 30-year-old wife. During the confrontation, the defendant brandished a knife, fatally stabbing his wife, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The prosecutor revealed that the defendant was apprehended during a police investigation and voluntarily confessed to the crime. The offense is in violation of Section 222 of the Penal Code Law of Benue, 2004.
