The Africa Media Development Foundation (AMDF) has marked the International Day to End Impunity Against Journalists by celebrating journalists across Africa.
In a joint statement issued by Sekyen Dadik and Joy Gadani, the Executive Director and Senior Programme Officer of AMDF, respectively, they emphasized the significance of this day in recognizing the essential role that journalists play in promoting transparency, accountability, and democracy on a global scale.
The statement highlighted the challenges and dangers that journalists face while carrying out their crucial work, often finding themselves on the frontlines reporting on issues such as corruption, human rights violations, conflicts, and other local and global matters.

As the guardians of society, journalists play a pivotal role in holding governments, institutions, and individuals accountable. They also give voice to the marginalized and advocate for justice, inclusivity, and development.
AMDF acknowledged the exceptional service that journalists provide at all levels, recognizing that this invaluable service comes with significant risks. African journalists frequently encounter various forms of harassment, intimidation, and violence, including threats, physical assaults, and even loss of life.
The statement expressed concerns about the prevailing culture of impunity that allows perpetrators to escape punishment, perpetuating a cycle of violence and suppression of the press. AMDF stressed the need for collaboration among governments, international organizations, and civil societies to create an environment where press freedom is upheld under all circumstances.
The statement emphasized the collective responsibility to strengthen legal frameworks that safeguard journalists, hold those who commit crimes against them accountable, and ensure that justice is served.
