The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is exploring the possibility of sending its national president, Comrade Joe Ajaero, abroad for medical treatment due to the injuries he sustained from a brutal attack by thugs in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday.
Ajaero was reportedly subjected to a violent beating and blindfolded before being arrested by police officers at the Imo council secretariat of the NLC in Owerri. He had gone to lead a protest against the alleged mistreatment of workers by the state government.
After the assault, he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri for medical attention, but his health worsened in the following days. The NLC’s Head of Information and Public Affairs, Comrade Benson Upah, disclosed that discussions were underway to potentially transfer Ajaero abroad for more comprehensive medical care given the nature and severity of his injuries.
The Imo State Police command denied arresting Ajaero, claiming they took him into protective custody to prevent a potential mob attack.
The NLC had accused the state government of violating workers’ rights and welfare, and the protest, which initially started peacefully but escalated into violence, aimed to demand justice, accountability, and the fulfillment of agreements signed with the labor union.
Meanwhile, Ajaero stated that he is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Abuja and will decide on the union’s course of action after his recovery.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma alleged that Ajaero had not effectively separated his role as a national labor leader from his political interests in the state. The governor also refuted claims of unpaid worker salaries since he assumed office in 2020, emphasizing his commitment to regular salary payments and his endorsement by the state NLC chapter for his achievements in salary and civil service reforms.
