In the lead-up to the Kogi State governorship election scheduled for November 11, a remarkable and unprecedented number of people have been observed at the campaign rallies of the dominant political parties. These political heavyweights include the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Each of these leading parties is asserting its dominance in the race. Nevertheless, the key question remains: will the massive rally attendance translate into victory at the polls? With just nine days left before the election, the three major parties show no sign of slowing down, while some smaller parties are witnessing members switching sides.
Home Advantage:
Our investigation at DAILY POST suggests that the immense crowds at some of the campaign rallies can be attributed to the candidates’ home advantage. For instance, the rally held by Ahmed Ododo in Okene drew an estimated crowd of over 30,000 people, and similar unprecedented numbers were seen at the SDP and PDP rallies. According to the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Evangelist Kingsley Femi Fanwo, these crowds attended the party’s rallies in Okene out of their own volition, without financial inducement.
Analyst Opinions:
Political analyst Ahmed Muhammed expressed that Kogi West senatorial district, particularly the Okun-speaking area and Lokoja-Koto, will play a pivotal role in determining the next governor of the state. Another analyst, Hamza Aliyu, the Executive Director of the Initiative for Grassroot Advancement (INGRA), argued that the massive crowds seen at campaign rallies may not necessarily translate into votes on election day. Aliyu highlighted the tendency of politicians to financially incentivize rally attendance and emphasized the need for issue-based campaigns focused on candidates’ positions on critical matters rather than factors like ethnicity, religion, or gender.
Election Violence Fears:
The Kogi NGOs Network (KONGONET) has alleviated concerns regarding the rising violence in Kogi East ahead of the November 11 governorship election. Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, chairperson of KONGONET, emphasized the significance of strong mobilization and assurance from security agencies to ensure a peaceful gubernatorial election. Muraina stressed the importance of preventing a repeat of past negative experiences in Kogi State gubernatorial elections.
Ethnic-Based Voting:
Activist Comrade Idris Abdul Miliki expressed disappointment that voters in Kogi State appear to be making their choices based on ethnicity rather than the competence and ideologies of the candidates. He noted that the focus on ethnicity is a source of concern, particularly given the state’s history of election-related issues. Miliki also highlighted the ruling party’s role in exacerbating the situation by nominating a successor from the same zone as the outgoing governor. This has led to concerns that the election may become a contentious affair. Additionally, Miliki noted that voters in different regions of the state are supporting candidates based on their ethnic affiliations, which he views as detrimental to the democratic process.
