The International Press Centre (IPC) has issued a press statement on Thursday, in observance of this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists (IDEI), calling for immediate and comprehensive investigations into documented cases of crimes against journalists throughout Nigeria. The IPC’s call is aimed at ensuring that those responsible for such crimes are held accountable.
The statement, signed by IPC Communications Officer Olutoyin Ayoade, expressed deep concern over the escalating threats to journalism and press freedom, citing numerous documented incidents of attacks against journalists. These crimes have intensified over the past decade and largely remain unresolved within the judicial system.
The Centre listed several unresolved cases of journalists killed in the line of duty in Nigeria, including Alex Ogbu (Regent Africa Times), Ikechukwu Onubogu (Anambra Broadcasting Service), Maxwell Nashan (Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria), Onifade Emmanuel Pelumi (Gboah TV), and Precious Owolabi (Channels TV).
Furthermore, the IPC’s Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists (ICSPJ) reported twenty-nine cases of attacks involving thirty-nine journalists across the country. These attacks encompass a range of actions, such as imposing fines, physical assault, harassment, picture deletion, unlawful arrests, detentions, and intimidation, among others.
In the statement, Lanre Arogundade, the Executive Director of IPC, emphasized that “Frequent attacks on journalists discourage the media from performing its core functions during elections, especially in providing credible information to enable the people to make informed choices.”
Arogundade urged the administration to take immediate measures to adhere to regional and international safety frameworks for journalists, including UNESCO’s three Ps: Prevention, Protection, and Prosecution. He also called on law enforcement authorities to prioritize the safety of journalists who will be on duty during the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi States on November 11.
Additionally, Arogundade encouraged journalists to take responsibility for their safety by following election reporting safety guidelines provided by IPC and adhering to the Nigeria Media Code of Election Coverage.
