The President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Professor Cyril Usifoh, has disclosed that in the last two years, more than 7,000 pharmacists have departed Nigeria in search of more favorable employment conditions abroad. Speaking in Gombe, the capital of Gombe State, Professor Usifoh underscored the alarming issue of brain drain in the healthcare sector of the country.
He emphasized the urgent need to address this problem due to its potential negative impact on the well-being of Nigerians. Professor Usifoh called on the government to create a supportive environment for the practice of pharmacy, aiming to reverse this trend and encourage pharmacists to remain in the country and contribute to its development.
In his words, “To combat the brain drain phenomenon, we must establish conditions that make staying in Nigeria an appealing choice. The government should play a role in facilitating the development of such a conducive environment, not only to retain pharmacists but also to attract those who have left back to Nigeria. We are committed to staying and serving the nation.
As a professor of pharmacy, Mr. Usifoh also highlighted the commitment of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria to strengthening the country’s self-sufficiency in healthcare and enhancing the overall health sector.
Regarding the ongoing 96th annual conference of the PSN in Gombe State, Mr. Usifoh noted that it offers an opportunity to assess the organization’s achievements in the past year and strategize on ways to improve the healthcare sector.
He mentioned that conference attendees, including members and industry professionals, are exploring potential collaborations with the Gombe State government to tap into the opportunities available in the pharmaceutical industry within the state.
