Just In: Rivers State Police Explain Their Actions On The Fubara Incident: What Led To The Shots?....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Rivers State Police Command explained why they used water cannons and tear gas during a protest at the state’s House of Assembly complex in Port Harcourt on Monday, clarifying that their actions were aimed at dispersing the protesters and not intended to target the Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

The spokesperson for the state’s police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, released a statement regarding the incident. She stated, “In response to credible intelligence about the intentions of an armed group to cause chaos in Port Harcourt, particularly at the State House of Assembly on Monday, October 30, and considering a recent case of arson at the State House of Assembly that is currently under investigation, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations promptly deployed armed police officers under his personal supervision to intercept these ‘hoodlums’ and safeguard lives and property at the State House of Assembly and its vicinity.

“At the entrance of the complex, it was apparent that a group of over a hundred youths had initiated a protest, which had the potential to disturb the peace. Consequently, the police employed non-lethal crowd control equipment, such as tear gas and water cannons, to disperse the unruly and uncontrollable protesters.

“However, some minutes later, another aggressive group of individuals approached the complex’s entrance and advanced toward the premises. The police responded in a similar manner but noticed that the State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was among them.

“The police expressed surprise and concern at the Governor’s presence at the scene, as there had been no prior communication to the police about his visit to the scene of the incident. It is customary and advisable that his security detail accompanies him for safety, particularly given the existing security threat at the time.

“In light of this, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Operations took deliberate security measures to ensure the Governor’s protection and safety while he and his entourage assessed the extent of the fire damage.

“It is essential to clarify that the police did not intentionally target or attempt to harm the Governor or any individual, let alone the state’s Chief Executive and security officer, which is our primary responsibility to protect, as some media reports have incorrectly suggested. In light of the current situation and the misrepresentation in certain sections of the media, it is crucial to provide this clarification.

“Furthermore, the Rivers State Police Command has put in place adequate security measures to de-escalate the situation and restore complete calm in the affected areas.”

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
