The Commandant-General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Audi, revealed on Tuesday that the federal government and various security agencies are actively pursuing efforts to locate and safely return kidnapped schoolboys and schoolgirls across the country. This initiative is part of a coordinated strategy to address the abduction of students. Audi made this announcement while briefing journalists on the upcoming National Summit on Identified Threats and Security Elements Affecting the Safe Schools Project in Nigeria, held at the Corps headquarters in Abuja.
Audi highlighted that in recent months, security agencies have thwarted around 48 kidnapping attempts and attacks on schools throughout the nation, particularly in Zamfara and Nasarawa states. These efforts are underpinned by strengthened intelligence gathering to prevent further incidents.
He emphasized that the search for the missing Chibok and Dapchi girls continues, and neither the government nor security agencies have abandoned their commitment to finding them.
The Commandant-General noted that the Safe Schools Initiative has been instrumental in reducing the frequency of attacks on schools and has contributed to more successful outcomes in addressing such threats. Over 1,800 security operatives and participants have been trained in the Safe Schools Initiative across the country’s six geopolitical zones to enhance the safety and security of schools in Nigeria.
The forthcoming summit, set to begin on Thursday in Abuja at NAF Conference, Kado, will provide a platform for key stakeholders to discuss and strategize on the challenges related to the Safe Schools Project. It will also inform relevant parties about the coordination role of the National Safe Schools Response Coordination Center and aim to facilitate a nationwide dialogue to enhance the effective implementation of the Safe Schools Project. Over 300 institutions and critical stakeholders are expected to participate in the event, alongside representatives from all security agencies.

Court Sentences Man to Four Years for ₦16 Million Money Laundering, Forfeits G-Wagon
A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has sentenced Sunmonu Olasunkanmi Thaoban to four years in prison for laundering ₦16 million by disguising its illegal origins and converting it into a 2018 black G-Wagon Jeep.

Guilty Plea & Sentencing: Justice Akintayo Aluko handed down the sentence on Thursday after Thaoban pleaded guilty to a two-count EFCC charge, alongside an alternative fine option of ₦1.8 million.

The Offense: Prosecutors stated that Thaoban acted as a middleman in 2023, funneling illicit funds to purchase the luxury vehicle, violating the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Asset Forfeiture: In addition to the prison term, the judge ordered the permanent forfeiture of both the convict’s G-Wagon and mobile phone to the Federal Government.

In a separate proceeding, Justice Aluko also convicted four Bureau de Change (BDC) operators—Umar Muhammad Lamido, Yusuf Musa Yusuf, Abdulmuhimin Mahmud, and Muhammed Musa—for conducting unauthorized foreign exchange transactions outside the official market. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
A Delta State High Court has handed down death sentences to two individuals for their involvement in the 2018 killing of Delta State University (DELSU) undergraduate Elozino Ogege, following a ruling that found them guilty. Meanwhile, a third co-defendant facing charges related to the same incident was discharged and acquitted.
