The Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has announced that the National Assembly is working on legislation aimed at regulating Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address issues like identity theft. Speaking during the 7th Convocation Ceremony, jointly organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies and the University of Benin in Abuja, Abbas emphasized the importance of establishing a regulatory framework for emerging technologies in Nigeria.
While acknowledging the significant benefits of new technologies such as AI and robotics, Abbas emphasized the need to prevent their misuse and abuse. He highlighted AI’s potential to enhance various sectors, including healthcare, transport, manufacturing, and energy, as well as its transformative impact on education.

The speaker noted that AI integration into education could lead to a significant shift in teaching and learning methods. However, he also pointed out potential challenges, such as AI’s capacity to perpetuate biases in datasets and algorithms, displace jobs by automating routine tasks, and increase the risk of identity theft and fraud through deep fake technology.
In response to these opportunities and threats posed by AI, Abbas stated that the 10th House of Representatives would engage with stakeholders and experts on the subject. They intend to address issues related to privacy, accountability, ethics, security, and intellectual property. Moreover, the National Assembly plans to collaborate with the executive branch to incorporate emerging technologies, including AI and robotics, into the school curriculum. As part of these efforts, Abbas will introduce a bill to regulate Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria, aiming to create better conditions for AI development and use while fostering innovation. This legislative initiative would be among the first of its kind in Africa and one of the few worldwide.
