President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has issued a directive to the National Great Green Wall (NGGW) to address desertification in eleven frontline states in the northern region.
Dr. Yusuf Maina Bukar, the agency’s Director-General, made this announcement in Abuja shortly after receiving an award from the National Renewed Hope Youth Ambassadors, a pro-Tinubu/Shetimma support group.
The affected states include Borno, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, and Adamawa.
Bukar explained that his agency is collaborating with the affected states and other stakeholders to combat desertification and its far-reaching consequences.
He emphasized the agency’s commitment to addressing the impact of desertification on farmlands and the livelihood of people in these states. Desertification has caused significant damage in these areas.
“We are working with the states to address this issue. The loss of farmlands and livelihoods in these areas illustrates the extent of damage and danger posed by desertification.”
“We will not relent; we are dedicated to assisting President Tinubu in fulfilling his ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda for Nigeria.”
Haruna Adamu Sardauna, the Director-General of the National Renewed Hope Youth Ambassadors, explained that the award was presented to Bukar in recognition of his accomplishments in office, particularly in establishing shelter belts, woodlots, plantations, orchards, and gardens in tertiary institutions.
