The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confiscated a substantial 6,668 tons of illegal substances over a span of two years, according to a statement released on Friday by NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi. During this period, the agency also apprehended more than 36,000 suspects and successfully prosecuted over 6,000 individuals.

The statement highlighted that the Chairman of the anti-narcotics agency, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd), disclosed these figures in response to a request from Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, who sought a partnership and an increased deployment of NDLEA officers throughout the state to combat the issue of drug abuse.

“The drug problem is a significant concern that has had a detrimental impact on the lives of our youth and communities,” stated Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa. “It stands as the foremost public enemy, particularly in its criminal aspects. Ninety-nine percent of criminals must first have access to drugs and be under the influence to commit some of their offenses.”

He further explained the NDLEA’s approach, saying, “That is why the NDLEA, with the full support of our directorates and management, has directed all efforts toward ‘offensive action.’ This involves proactively seizing all drugs that are cultivated, imported, or on the brink of being exported from the country.”

“In the past two years, we have seized over 6,668 tons of illicit substances, and we are committed to a relentless effort until our streets are free from drugs. This aspect is focused on reducing the drug supply, which includes the arrest and prosecution of those involved in illicit drug activities. During this time, we have arrested more than 36,000 suspects, and over 6,000 of them have already been prosecuted and convicted,” Marwa added.

Strategic Partnership Details

  • Formal Agreement: The two agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, July 17, 2026, at the NDLEA headquarters.

  • Operational Integration: The partnership includes provisions for intelligence sharing, coordinated joint operations, officer capacity building, and the exchange of technical resources.

  • Joint Working Committee: A committee will be established to ensure the agreement translates into tangible operational results.

Rationale for Collaboration

  • Shared Criminal Networks: NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), noted that criminal syndicates often engage in both narcotics trafficking and the piracy of creative works, using proceeds from one illicit activity to finance the other.

  • Economic and Social Impact: NCC Director-General, Dr. John Asein, emphasized that organized piracy is a major criminal enterprise that undermines Nigeria’s creative economy, destroys jobs, and weakens national security.

  • Intersecting Supply Chains: Both agencies identified that the same clandestine networks, transportation routes, and financial channels used for drug trafficking are frequently utilized to distribute pirated goods and launder criminal proceeds.

  • Inter-Agency Synergy: The leadership of both organizations highlighted the importance of moving away from isolated operations toward a collaborative model that leverages the specific expertise and intelligence capabilities of each agency.

The initiative aims to more effectively disrupt illegal supply chains, dismantle criminal structures, and protect both the creative sector and the general public from the influence of organized crime.
