The Senate has granted approval for a bill advocating the establishment of a Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin-Ekiti Kingdom, Ekiti State. This educational initiative aims to produce world-class technologists and human resources capable of sustainably managing the nation’s economy. The bill received unanimous ratification during the plenary session on Thursday and has been referred to the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) for further legislative deliberations.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele was the bill’s sponsor, and it garnered widespread support from senators across the political spectrum. This legislation, initially introduced in the ninth National Assembly, returned for consideration at the Senate Chambers on October 17, 2023, with a specific focus on addressing knowledge gaps in technology and environmental sciences.

“When established, the university will further advance knowledge through research and nurture unique technological innovation, entrepreneurship, and wealth management within its core area of interest.
“Mr. President, distinguished colleagues, enacting this bill will contribute to transforming the technological and educational landscape, producing the essential manpower and expertise that Nigeria eagerly needs to accelerate its economic growth and ensure sustainable development,” stated the Senate leader.
Various senators, including Deputy President of the Senate Senator Barau Jubrin and others from different committees, expressed their support for the bill’s establishment. They emphasized the importance of technology and environmental sciences for the country’s development in the 21st century and the need for knowledge-based education in this era.
