The Lagos State government has reported the impoundment of over one hundred vehicles, encompassing both private and commercial buses, due to alleged unauthorized parking.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) issued a statement on Thursday, as confirmed by Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department. The impounding operation, initiated by LASTMA operatives, commenced on Wednesday and resulted in the seizure of more than 100 vehicles within a span of 24 hours.
Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, spearheaded the enforcement efforts. This action followed the expiration of a 7-day ‘Vacation Order’ announced on Monday, October 16, instructing motorists and commercial bus operators to vacate all unauthorized parking locations and garages situated on top bridges.

It should be recalled that Giwa recently issued a ‘Vacation Order’ granting vehicle owners, especially commercial bus operators, a 7-day grace period to cease parking on state bridges. The intention behind this operation is to eliminate infractions that obstruct the smooth flow of traffic on bridges across Lagos State.
As reported in today’s statement, over 100 private and commercial vehicles were seized at bridges including Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon Ebute-Ero, and Idumota (Carter) on Lagos Island. These actions are deemed to be in violation of the provisions outlined in the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018.
According to Giwa, this enforcement operation is an ongoing initiative aimed at achieving zero tolerance for the activities of commercial bus drivers operating illegal parking and garages on top bridges, aligning with the administration’s ‘Theme+’ agenda. He further emphasized that continuous efforts will be made to ensure the unhindered flow of traffic, with an escalation in enforcement actions against non-compliant private and commercial bus drivers. Giwa noted that all vehicle owners, both private and commercial, whose vehicles were impounded, will face immediate prosecution at the Lagos State Mobile Court.
