The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a response to the Supreme Court’s ruling confirming President Bola Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 election. Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) had appealed the decision of the Presidential Election Petitions Court (PEPC), which upheld Tinubu’s win. However, the apex court, on Thursday, dismissed their appeals on the grounds of lacking merit.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP expressed its disappointment and described the decision as a letdown for Nigerians. The party criticized the Supreme Court for what it perceived as condoning “serious issues of forgery, falsehood, and perjury under the guise of technicalities.
The statement further read, “The PDP and indeed the majority of Nigerians are alarmed, disappointed, and deeply concerned about the rationale behind the Supreme Court’s decision, which, according to the PDP, goes against the explicit provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022, and the Guidelines and Regulations issued by INEC for conducting the election.”
The PDP contended that the Supreme Court’s judgment did not uphold the clear provisions of the law, leading to widespread disappointment among Nigerians who had expected it to provide substantial justice based on the laws and facts of the case.
The party expressed concern that the Supreme Court overlooked issues related to the qualification and minimum requirements for a presidential election winner, particularly the statutory requirement of securing 25% of votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It also raised concerns about violations of electoral rules and guidelines, manipulation of election results, and alterations by the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP emphasized that the judgment had shaken the confidence of Nigerians in the judiciary, particularly in the Supreme Court as the final arbiter of justice. Despite the disappointment, the PDP urged Nigerians not to be discouraged and encouraged them to continue their collective pursuit of a credible electoral system that derives legitimacy from the people.
The general mood of disillusionment and despair in the country following the judgment reflects the gravity of the situation, and the PDP warned that it could have serious consequences.
