In the commissioning of the Mission to Seafarers (MTS) center in Lagos, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, reiterated the federal government’s determination to enhance Nigeria’s standing in the worldwide maritime sector. With growing global competition, the move is deemed essential to boost the competitiveness of Nigerian ports, facilitate trade, and bolster the nation’s balance of trade, as outlined in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policy agenda.
The Minister emphasized the pivotal role of the maritime sector in realizing these objectives and pledged to equip seafarers and maritime workers with the tools necessary to overcome work-related challenges. The reconstruction of the MTS facility is a significant step towards maximizing Nigeria’s maritime resources’ comparative advantages and elevating the nation’s reputation in the global maritime community.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Ports Authority, Mohammed Bello-Koko, stressed the significance of seafarers in global trade and the need to provide them with well-furnished facilities for relaxation and psychosocial support. The commissioning of the Seafarers Centre is aligned with the economic goals of the present administration and demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to advancing maritime trade and prosperity within Nigeria’s blue economy.
Adebayo Sarumi, Chairman of the Mission to Seafarers, Lagos, noted the evolving needs of seafarers, including advocacy for shore leave, legal assistance, counseling, pastoral care, and psychological support. The collaboration between the Mission to Seafarers and other partners is expected to yield positive outcomes for Nigeria and seafarers, contributing to the nation’s maritime competitiveness and its appeal to new opportunities.
