Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, has expressed his commitment to securing presidential authorization for the implementation of scanning technology at various ports across Nigeria to streamline operations. He emphasized that the digitization of port procedures is pivotal in making Nigeria’s ports competitive on the international stage, aligning them with more advanced nations.

During a panel discussion at the 29th session of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG), themed “Pathways to Sustainable Economic Transformation and Inclusion,” Oyetola also unveiled plans to establish a comprehensive roadmap for the ministry. He stressed that this policy agenda is essential for elevating the sector to a position of excellence, both regionally and globally.

Recognizing the maritime sector’s pivotal role in facilitating business operations in Nigeria’s import-dependent economy, Oyetola emphasized the need to expedite efforts in improving waterway navigability, addressing port depth concerns, achieving 24-hour cargo clearance, and enhancing port connectivity to efficient road and rail networks. He highlighted various challenges facing the maritime sector, such as slow legislative reforms, weak governance, infrastructure deficiencies, inefficient port management, inadequate road networks, the dominance of foreign shipping companies, and non-competitiveness compared to West African neighbors.

Furthermore, Oyetola announced the introduction of innovative business models to enhance the sector’s capabilities and ensure continual dredging of inland waterways. He emphasized the global trend of digitalization in seaports, citing its effectiveness in enhancing efficiency and reducing corruption. Oyetola called for strict digitalization of all port operations in Nigeria and immediate rehabilitation of port facilities to modernize and align them with advanced maritime nations, allowing Nigerian ports to regain their position as a maritime hub for West and Central Africa.

The Ministry is also working on streamlining the numerous government agencies operating at the ports through the full implementation of the national single window initiative.
