Chief Segun Awolowo, the grandson of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the former premier of the Western Region, is delighted by the upcoming staging of the play “Awo” in the United Kingdom (UK) in May 2024. Produced by the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, the play, which was initially performed in Lagos in 2022, offers a chronicle of the life and legacy of the sage who passed away in 1987.

In a letter personally addressed to Mr. Joseph Edgar, Chairman of the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, Segun expressed his profound joy and excitement, stating that both himself and other members of the Awolowo family have eagerly received the news. He fondly recalled watching the play at the historic Glover Hall in Lagos, which holds significance as the place where his late grandfather witnessed numerous theatrical performances during his tenure as the premier of the Western Region.

Segun marveled at the play’s artistic excellence and historical accuracy, expressing his wholehearted endorsement of the UK performance. He pledged to provide any support within his means to ensure the project’s resounding success and eagerly anticipated hosting of the play’s guests at a celebratory cocktail event.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a significant figure in Nigeria’s history, was a federal commissioner for finance and one of the nation’s founding fathers, alongside leaders like Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and Alhaji Ahmadu Bello.

“I therefore have specific requests as part of our efforts to consolidate peace and state reconciliation: Let us rebuild public trust in the police. You must make deliberate efforts to remove many areas of current police conduct that paint it as partisan and anti-people,” Governor Adeleke stated.
