Niger State Governor, Muhammed Umar Bago, has emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing climate change in order to mitigate both natural and man-made disasters in the state.

Speaking at the commencement of a two-day retreat for members of the House of Representatives Press Corps, the Governor urged the media to champion the cause of climate change, highlighting its significant impact on the global economy. Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Yakubu Garba, Governor Bago underscored the importance of recognizing the dangers posed by climate change, which prompted the state government to convene a Green Economy Summit.

He stated, “Since taking office, we have been proactive in informing the public about preventive measures to safeguard lives and reduce damage to property and infrastructure. We are open to collaborating with the media to promote this advocacy and formulate strategies to make climate change issues a top priority.”

Governor Bago expressed his profound respect for the media, acknowledging its indispensable role in upholding the rule of law and facilitating good governance. He stressed that without the media, the essential checks and balances within government would be lacking, making democracy unsustainable.

He went on to highlight the severity of climate change as a global issue, impacting nations significantly. The Governor cited concerns in Nigeria, such as flooding, desertification, environmental pollution, and their subsequent effects. He also linked climate change to part of the nation’s security challenges, asserting that it should be a top priority.

Governor Bago encouraged the media to focus not only on politics but also on climate change, as it directly affects human well-being and living conditions. He urged journalists to equip themselves with the necessary skills and tools to effectively report on climate change and set an agenda for the Legislature and the Executive.

In response, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Yakubu Kolo, discussed the steps taken by the state to address climate change and launched a two-day program dedicated to discussing the green economy.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Ms. Grace Ike, acknowledged the significant impact of climate change on the nation’s environment and ecosystems. She commended the government’s policies to mitigate the effects of climate change and emphasized the media’s role in disseminating this information effectively.

Ms. Ike also praised the state’s Green Economy initiatives and recognized Governor Bago’s innovative ideas in the fields of economy and security. In light of these contributions, she announced the honor of the “Most Innovative Governor in Economy and Security Issues” would be conferred during the program.
