INEC Assures Nigerians Credibility Amid Litigations From 2023 General Election....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has responded to a media report challenging its credibility due to numerous litigations arising from the 2023 general election. The electoral body, in a statement titled “Media report on election petitions and the credibility of INEC,” emphasized that its credibility remains intact despite the legal challenges.

Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, expressed his disappointment with the media report, highlighting the inaccuracies it contained.

The report in question, titled “INEC’s credibility sinks as 94% contested posts await tribunal,” was published by a well-established national newspaper. It questioned INEC’s credibility based on the significant number of contested positions.

INEC clarified that the report contained incorrect figures, misinterpretation of pre-election and post-election cases, and a misleading perspective that unfairly attributes election petitions to INEC’s actions or inactions. The electoral body asserted that the report’s claim that Assembly elections were only conducted in 28 states is based on an inaccurate assumption.

In response, INEC pointed out that the report neglected to analyze the outcomes of the cases decided by election tribunals. Out of 1,196 petitions, 712 were dismissed, and 179 were withdrawn, indicating that the tribunals upheld the results of elections conducted by INEC in 74.4% of the cases.

The statement emphasized that filing election petitions is an integral part of the democratic process and does not tarnish the integrity of INEC or the electoral system. It also noted that the grounds for challenging election outcomes are not limited to INEC’s conduct but extend to candidates’ eligibility and other qualifications.

INEC highlighted that the number of election petitions filed does not necessarily correlate with the percentage of overturned elections, and the report’s analysis was methodologically flawed. The statement concluded by asserting that the media should aim to strengthen rather than impugn the integrity of public institutions.

The match began with an immediate impact from Arsenal, as Kai Havertz capitalized on a pass from Leandro Trossard to put the London club ahead within the first six minutes. Arsenal maintained their lead for much of the first half, successfully frustrating the French champions.

The momentum shifted in the 63rd minute when a VAR review resulted in a penalty for PSG. Ousmane Dembélé stepped up to the spot and converted two minutes later, bringing the score level at 1-1. Despite intense efforts from both sides during the remainder of regulation and throughout extra time, neither team could find a winning goal.

The title was ultimately decided by penalties. In the shootout, PSG held their nerve, with Lucas Beraldo converting their final spot-kick. With Arsenal needing to score to force sudden death, defender Gabriel Magalhães sent his effort over the bar, sealing a 4-3 victory for the French side.

This triumph marks a historic achievement for PSG, who become the first French club to win the UEFA Champions League title in two consecutive seasons, having defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the 2025 final.
