Human Rights Activist Femi Falana Blast National Assembly’s Inaction On Basic Education....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Nigerian human rights activist, Femi Falana, has strongly criticized the National Assembly for not taking sufficient action to enhance the state of basic education in the country. In a press release on Sunday, October 15, Falana accused the National Assembly of making hollow claims regarding the inadequacies in the nation’s basic education system.
Falana further rebuked lawmakers for attempting to amend the Universal Basic Education Act of 2004 by introducing harsh penalties for parents who fail to send their children to school.
He argued that the political class has not paid adequate attention to elementary education, as they have not ensured that the counterpart funds required from states are paid to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Falana stated, “The needless resolutions are indeed unfortunate because they show that the federal lawmakers seem to lack institutional memory of the progress made by the legislature in enacting laws to promote universal access to basic education.”
He emphasized the joint responsibility of the Federal, State, and Local Governments to ensure that every Nigerian child receives free and compulsory education, citing the adoption of the Child’s Rights Act by all 36 states. However, he noted that the political class, spanning various political parties, has not shown commitment to the education of every child in Nigeria.
Instead of imposing stricter penalties on parents, Falana urged the National Assembly to address the issue of state governments failing to make counterpart contributions to the Universal Basic Education Fund, as mandated by the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act. He called for urgent action to amend the Constitution and empower the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct the counterpart funds directly from state governments’ sources to support the Universal Basic Education Fund.
