As the Oyo state government strives to mitigate the consequences of subsidy removal, its plan to distribute around 11,000 bags of poultry feed to 1,691 poultry farmers in the state has garnered the attention of Nigerians.
The initiative also covers 1,691 fish farmers, 2537 crop farmers, and 2539 cattle, sheep, and goat farmers in its first phase. The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Mr. Olasunkanmi Olaleye, revealed this during the commemoration of World Egg Day in Ibadan, the state’s capital.
The program aims to bolster food security within the state, and Olasunkanmi highlighted the crucial role poultry farmers play in achieving this objective. The government’s interest in regulating the poultry sector is driven by the need for accurate data on poultry farmers and the assurance of quality production for public consumption.
A significant aspect of the program focuses on feeding. The state government will monitor the production of feed for poultry to enhance farmers’ profitability and ensure the availability of robust day-old chicks. The aim is to standardize poultry product processing in the state.
The Commissioner called upon the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) to collaborate with the government in advancing food security in the state, emphasizing that government cannot accomplish everything on its own.
Omidokun Oyekunle, the Chairman of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) in Oyo State, recognized the significance of World Egg Day, a global event celebrated on October 13th. He highlighted the nutritional value of eggs, containing proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids required by the human body. Poultry farming has played a vital role in eradicating poverty in Oyo State, creating employment opportunities for its citizens.
Oyekunle also expressed appreciation for the good relationship between Oyo State PAN and the present government, pledging to cooperate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to combat unscrupulous practices in the poultry business.
To commemorate World Egg Day, a display of various foods made from eggs was showcased at the Iwo-road Interchange in Ibadan, offering a glimpse into the culinary versatility of this dietary staple.
