Professor Pat Utomi, a political economist, expressed his concern that politics has had a detrimental effect on the institutions in Nigeria. He lamented that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no longer commands the same level of respect it once did.
Utomi voiced his reservations during his address at the primary gathering of the new tribe of Patriots for the Nigerian Restoration, held in Abuja on Wednesday.
He emphasized that Nigeria currently needs robust institutions more than ever due to the profound national crisis it is facing. Utomi stated that the weakening of the country’s institutions, along with the erosion of shared values, has significantly hindered the nation’s efforts to construct a better future.

He argued that values play a crucial role in shaping human progress, while strong institutions remain indispensable for the advancement of any society.
Utomi remarked, “Politics has further weakened our institutions, no one takes INEC as an institution seriously anymore. Institutions are critical to the growth of any society, values shape human progress.”
He acknowledged the widespread frustration among Nigerians and their international allies with the country’s current state, whether in terms of pervasive insecurity or the scourge of poverty, despite the nation’s evident potential for prosperity.
Utomi pointed out that the toxic politics of the times, coupled with the feeble and failing institutions and the erosion of cultural values, have led to widespread distress and anguish among both the strong and the weak, the rich and the poor, and those who are either committed or disheartened, waiting for an opportunity to leave.
