The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed its opposition to the inclusion of private universities as beneficiaries of interventions by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). The President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, conveyed the union’s stance during a two-day interactive session between TETFund and all unions of beneficiary institutions. He argued that such a move would result in a proliferation of private universities lacking in quality.
While acknowledging TETFund’s commendable interventions in tertiary institutions, Osodeke urged the agency to focus on improving its project monitoring methods across the country. He also pointed out discrepancies in the performance levels of beneficiary institutions that received the same funding. Osodeke called for sanctions against non-performing institutions and advocated for the abolishment of what he referred to as “stakeholders’ funds.”
In response, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Sonny Echono, explained that the interactive session aimed to address the current challenges in the sub-sector proactively. Echono stressed the importance of continuous engagement to enhance the growth and development of tertiary education, as well as to prevent and mitigate industrial disputes.
Echono also emphasized the need for collaboration between TETFund, beneficiary institutions, and the unions to promote the growth and development of tertiary education in Nigeria. He highlighted TETFund’s primary mandate of rehabilitating and consolidating tertiary education in the country.
Comrade Ayuba Wabba, a former president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commended TETFund for its commitment to elevating university education and the overall educational experience. He particularly praised the unions in tertiary institutions for their clear and consistent positions, which have contributed to the resistance against detrimental government policies.
Wabba noted that the NLC drew inspiration from the unions in tertiary institutions in its resistance against the influence of neoliberal policies in Nigeria’s successive governments.
The Kwara State Police Command has announced the arrest of a suspected key logistics provider for criminal gangs and bandits operating within the state. Command Strategy: State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, emphasized that the command is shifting its focus to dismantling the supply chains, informants, and collaborators that enable criminal activity. He reaffirmed that the police are determined to deny these groups the resources and support networks they need to operate.
The police have encouraged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help security agencies disrupt these criminal networks and prevent future attacks.

Conversely, the Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has issued a demand for President Tinubu’s resignation, citing persistent economic hardship and national insecurity. Supported by the House of Representatives Minority Caucus, acting National Chairman Peter Ameh argued that the current administration has failed to produce the necessary results for good governance. The statement emphasized that leadership is a responsibility rather than a right, suggesting that the honorable path for an official who cannot alleviate citizens’ suffering is to step down.
