The former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has provided an explanation for the disparity between his current name and the name on his Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) certificate.
In response to allegations of certificate forgery, Atiku clarified that both Siddiq and Atiku are names associated with Islamic theology, given by Prophet Muhammad to his close associate, Caliph Abubakar. He emphasized that there is no difference between Atiku Abubakar and Sadiq Abubakar.

Atiku stated that he possesses all the necessary documentation related to his official name change and accused President Bola Tinubu’s camp of exploiting the situation for political advantage.
He expressed his willingness to undergo scrutiny regarding his background, highlighting that he has the original certificates of the affidavits regarding his name change.
The statement acknowledged the inquiries into Atiku’s educational credentials as a positive effort to uncover the truth but noted that many of those raising these questions are supporters and aides of President Bola Tinubu. These individuals have sought to draw parallels between the allegations of forgery against Atiku and the purported document discrepancies in President Tinubu’s records submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Atiku disclosed that he took his WAEC examination in 1968 under the name Siddiq Abubakar. He explained that both Siddiq and Atiku are names historically linked to one individual in Islamic theology.
Atiku provided an affidavit in 1973, over 50 years ago, stating his official preference to be known as Atiku Abubakar, and he retains the original copy of that affidavit to this day.
The statement called on President Tinubu to follow Atiku’s example and offer an explanation regarding the opaque aspects of his background, which have remained concealed for decades. It pointed to President Tinubu’s history of alleged forgeries and document falsification, including the recent controversy over a certificate from the Chicago State University, which was disavowed by the institution and could potentially disqualify him from running for office. It emphasized the need for transparency and accountability on the part of President Tinubu.
