The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has received two new aircraft to enhance its ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the country. These Diamond-62 aircraft were officially introduced in Ilorin, Kwara State.
Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for NAF, confirmed this development in a statement released on Wednesday. He quoted Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of the Air Staff, as saying during the ceremony that the process leading to the arrival of these two additional aircraft began approximately two years ago when the Federal Government allocated funds for the acquisition of four Diamond-62 aircraft for NAF.
According to Abubakar, “Out of the four aircraft, the first two were delivered between February and July 2023, with the remaining two being received today.” He further mentioned that the two DA-62 aircraft received earlier this year have already been deployed to support ongoing peace and stability efforts in troubled regions within the country.
Abubakar urged the air and ground crew responsible for operating these aircraft to prioritize discipline and professionalism and ensure their proper maintenance and operation in accordance with the manufacturer’s best practices. He also encouraged them to make the most of the capabilities available on these aircraft to enhance NAF’s operational efficiency.
In acknowledgment of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving NAF and other services, Abubakar paid tribute to the government for its support and expressed his confidence that these additional aircraft would contribute to peace restoration in troubled areas.
He also announced that NAF would soon receive additional platforms, including M346FA aircraft, AW109 Trekker light attack helicopters, AH-1Z Super Cobra, T-129 ATAK helicopters, and King Air 360i Beechcraft aircraft.
During the ceremony, the Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrazak Abdulrahman, commended NAF and other security agencies for their efforts in addressing the nation’s security challenges. He expressed his gratitude to the Chief of the Air Staff for choosing Ilorin as the home base for the DA-62 aircraft, a choice that reflects the peaceful and supportive environment of the state.
The Governor assured the Chief of the Air Staff of his administration’s unwavering support for NAF and other security agencies in their critical missions of safeguarding lives and property.
In his welcome address, AVM Tajudeen Yusuf, the Air Officer Commanding Mobility Command, emphasized that the acquisition of the DA-62 aircraft was driven by its capability to execute robust missions in support of combat operations. He also highlighted the positive impact of locating the DA-62 under the 303 Medium Airlift Group in Ilorin on the unit’s operational activities.
