The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather report for the upcoming three days, predicting a combination of dust haze and thunderstorms across the country.
According to NiMet, dust haze characterized by visibility ranging from 1km to 3km and localized visibility of 1,000m or less is expected from Monday to Wednesday. Additionally, thunderstorms are anticipated in various regions:
– Thunderstorms may occur in parts of Taraba state later in the day.
– In the morning, thunderstorms are expected over portions of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, and Niger states, with visibility ranging from 2km to 5km due to suspended dust.
– In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are forecasted in parts of Kogi, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and Benue states.
– Morning thunderstorms are anticipated in parts of Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Cross River, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, and Akwa Ibom states.
Furthermore, NiMet predicts thunderstorms with rainfall in parts of Edo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Imo, Oyo, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos states later in the day.
On Tuesday, the northern region is expected to experience moderate dust haze with visibility ranging from 2km to 5km, and localized visibility of 1,000m or less throughout the day. The North Central region will have a hazy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine and the possibility of morning thunderstorms in some areas, including Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, and Benue. Thunderstorms are predicted later in the day in parts of Niger, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Benue, and Kwara states.
The Southern region will start with a cloudy morning and may experience thunderstorms and rainfall in the morning hours in parts of Ogun, Ondo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Delta, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states. In the afternoon and evening, thunderstorms are expected in parts of Ogun, Edo, Oyo, Delta, Osun, Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Lagos states.
NiMet warns of the potential for moderate to heavy rainfall that could result in flash floods and advises the public to exercise caution, avoiding driving and walking through flooded areas. Strong winds are expected to accompany the thunderstorms.
In conclusion, NiMet urges disaster risk managers, agencies, and individuals to be proactive in preventing loss of lives and property during the rainy season. It also advises airline operators to regularly check weather reports and alerts from NiMet to plan their operations effectively.
