Senior Advocate Olisa Agbakoba Advises Legal Community To Allow Supreme Court To Decide On Tinubu’s Certificate

On Monday, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Olisa Agbakoba expressed his concern that lawyers are exacerbating tensions in Nigeria through their comments on the controversy surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s Chicago State University records.
In recent days, there have been various opinions regarding President Tinubu’s academic records. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had requested the credentials, alleged that Tinubu forged the certificate he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). However, this allegation has been denied by the presidency and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement titled “This Madness of Chicago State University Must Stop Now!!!” Agbakoba urged lawyers to withhold their opinions and let the Supreme Court make a judgment on the matter.
The statement emphasized, “The cacophony of discordant voices on the Tinubu/Atiku certificate matter is completely out of hand. This utter nonsense from armchair lawyers is dangerously heating up Nigeria.”
Agbakoba continued, “Please, can we keep our opinions and views to ourselves while awaiting a decision from the Supreme Court? I am so ashamed to see lawyers on television arguing one way or the other on the merits or demerits of the Chicago State University matter. This is most unhelpful!”
He further called on the media to refrain from adjudicating the CSU matter on television and in newspapers, and he urged the President of the Nigerian Bar Association to address lawyers who breach ethical rules by turning the media into a courtroom.
Agbakoba concluded, “Can we please stop inflaming our country! Let us allow the Supreme Court of Nigeria to make a judicial pronouncement that is binding on us all! This public spectacle must come to an end.”
